Some things you should know about your perfumes before buying a new one
CHOOSE A FRAGRANCE THAT FITS YOUR LIFESTYLE
If you find yourself falling asleep in the office, try to avoid rose-scented fragrances as these may make you want to fall asleep; try and find something stimulating like black pepper infused in your fragrance to keep you feeling more awake!
THINK ABOUT WHERE YOU SPRAY THE PERFUME
Once you’ve found your perfect perfume, try applying onto clothes where there is maximum movement, for example the hem of your dress. Scents smell stronger on movement, whether it’s your wrists, or the trunk of your body.
Some easy ways to make your perfume last longer
1. Moisturise your pulse spots
Using a basic non-scented moisturiser like E45, or vaseline instead, will create a barrier and ensure that the fragrance holds longer, apparently. It ‘gives the oils something to ‘cling’ to, and will boost its staying power,’ according to Lorna, who also points out that this is a great reason to use matching scented moisturisers at the same time as your perfume as a way to ‘layer’ on your scent.
2. Don’t store your perfume in the bathroom
Although it’s often handy to keep our perfume in the bathroom with the rest of our toiletries, Joanne advises that ‘humidity and dampness will break down the perfume and weaken the fragrance.’ To avoid this happening, keep your bottle of scent in your bedroom instead.
3. Spray after showering, but before getting dressed
‘Moisture is becoming a theme here,’ notes Joanne. ‘Damp skin will lock in the scent but if you get dressed immediately it will rub off. Wait a few minutes for it to dry.’ Lorna also points out that perfume will ‘evolve and evaporate on the skin more naturally,’ than on the fabric of your clothes.
4. DON’T rub your wrists together
It’s habit for most perfume-wearers to spritz on their neck, and then each of their wrists, before rubbing them together. But who knew – this is actually counter productive! ‘Friction will cause the top notes of the perfume to fade faster and your perfume won’t last for as long,’ Joanne says; while Lorna adds that rubbing those wrists together will ‘break down the natural development of the perfume’. So there you have it!
